The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 488

He loosened his tie and undid a button, trying to cool off. When the drug first kicked in, Charles didn't think much of it; he simply assumed the living room's central heating was cranked up a bit too high. Reaching for a glass of cold water nearby, he hoped to find some relief. But just as he was about to take a sip, he paused, noticing a wave of heat rising from his core. Suddenly, his mouth was parched, and he craved something unfamiliar.

It had been over two years since he'd been with a woman-not for lack of desire, but because he had chosen to suppress it. This was the first time he'd felt such a strong reaction without Eve being around. Instantly, it hit him: he had been drugged. His expression shifted quickly as the realization set in. He snapped his gaze to Dahlia, sitting across from him, his eyes icy and full of fury. How could she dare?!

His chest heaved with anger, his face a cold mask of rage. He couldn't quite figure out when he had been slipped the drug, but this wasn't the moment to confront Dahlia. He had to get out before the drug took full hold. Once it wore off, he'd deal with Dahlia properly.

In a flash, Charles stood up, knocking over the water glass in his haste. As he stared at the spilled water, it dawned on him: the only thing he'd had since entering the room was that glass of water, and Sandy had been the one to pour it.

"Sandy!" he exclaimed, disbelief etched in his eyes. He couldn't fathom that Sandy would conspire with Dahlia to drug him.noveldrama

"Dad, are you okay? You don't look well," Sandy said, her face tight with worry. Seeing her father's odd behavior, she abandoned her meal and reached out to steady him. She truly had no idea what her mother had given him to drink. All she knew was that her mom had insisted he needed to have it. She never imagined it would make him feel so unwell and angry. She hated seeing him upset, and her eyes filled with tears.

The drug Dahlia used was powerful. Charles' vision began to blur. Instinctively, he shook Sandy's hand off, but under the drug's influence, he couldn't control his strength. Sandy was flung backward, landing hard on the floor. Shocked, she looked up at him, her eyes wide and teary. "Dad, that hurt..."

Charles was taken aback. "Sandy!" He moved to help her but stumbled, his footing unsteady.

"Charles, be careful!" Dahlia, who had quietly moved closer as she noticed the drug taking hold, reached out to steady him. Her hand brushed

against his waist, and even the ne

slight contact sent her heart racing. She had longed for this man for almost a decade. Having already experienced love's allure, she yearned to share it with Charles. He seemed so strong, and she loved him deeply. Being with him had to be infinitely better than being with Wesley.

Seven years ago, she had tried to manipulate him on their anniversary, but Evelyn had ended up with the prize. All these years, she hadn't been able to get close to Charles. The more she couldn't have him, the more she wanted him.

"Get off!" Charles gripped Dahlia's hand, showing no leniency, and twisted it sharply. To drug him and then dare to touch him was unthinkable.

"Dad!" Sandy, frightened, scrambled up from the floor and rushed over, clinging to Charles' arm and pleading on Dahlia's behalf. "Dad, please don't hurt Mom! Sandy's begging you!"

Hearing Sandy's voice, Charles

paused. Dahlia quickly pulled back her hand. The drug hadn't fully taken effect yet, so she decided to wait a little longer. This time, she had given Charles a dose strong enough to strip away his reason. It had been over two years since he'd been with a woman. Once the drug fully took over, she couldn't even imagine how wild he might become tonight.

And tonight was her ovulation

period; she had also taken fertility medication. After tonight, she wasz certain she could conceive. As long as she carried Charles' child, she'd secure a connection with him. Even if she couldn't marry him, having his child would tie them together for life. Charles would never be able to shake her off.
