Chapter 1408
Chapter 1408:
He anticipated Juliana’s words of reproach and hoped that his admission of fault would make her less angry with him. However, he had miscalculated. She had once been the pillar of the Carter family and was not someone Adrian could simply sway.
“I can’t believe you don’t know anything about how Marlene has been treating me. I think I’ve always been just and impartial to everyone in our family. But now that I’m bedridden, this is how I’m repaid?” Juliana’s eyes were sharp as she surveyed everyone present. “It seems you all shy away from the burden, unwilling to care for me as I near the end of my life. It turns out that Norah, who’s no longer even married into this family, has shown me the most compassion.”noveldrama
Adrian sighed. “Mom, I’m out working hard for our family every day. I assumed my wife and Marlene were looking after you well. Please don’t hold this against me. From here on out, I’ll make sure you’re treated properly.”
His words reflected his genuine hope for her recovery.
Among those in the room, perhaps only Adrian and Derek truly had Juliana’s best interests at heart.
Derek, who rarely came to see Juliana, looked visibly upset by what she said. “Grandma, what has Marlene been doing to you?”
“Time is short. I don’t have the luxury to discuss this with you.” Juliana didn’t even look at Derek as she gestured for Norah to come closer to her bedside. “I believed that once I lost my voice, whatever wealth I had would just follow me to the grave. But now that you’ve given me a chance to speak again, I’ve decided to leave my money to you.”
Adrian immediately ceased his cries and looked up, stunned. “Mom, I’m your son. You’re giving the money to an outsider? Don’t you see how many of us in the family need support? And Marlene is pregnant with a boy. He is a potential heir to the Carter name.”

Derek’s eyes brimmed with frustration. Juliana had money stashed away?
He spoke up. “Grandma, you know our family’s struggles. Any money should stay within the family. Miss Wilson doesn’t need your little money; she wouldn’t even value it as we do.”
Juliana remained resolute. She ignored the protests and fixed her gaze on Norah. “Norah, you are a good person. It doesn’t matter to me how you spend this money; just use it as you wish. I’ll tell you about the money…”
She leaned closer and whispered the rest of her words so only Norah could hear. Everyone else in the room was left straining their ears, desperate to catch any part of the conversation.
Marlene knelt beside the bed, her tone soft but insistent. “Juliana, that money belongs to the Carter family. You shouldn’t hand it over to an outsider. With that money, even if I can’t care for you myself, we can hire someone to take care of you and treat your illness. Doesn’t that sound better?”
Juliana’s chest rose and fell with effort, the strain of speaking clearly visible.
“Whether I get treated or not doesn’t matter anymore. I’d rather die here in this bed. From now on, the Carter family’s affairs are no longer my concern. You all need to fend for yourselves.”
Her voice faded, and her body slumped back onto the bed, her strength completely drained.
The Carter family watched silently as Norah carefully removed the silver needle from Juliana’s head. Their expressions were a mixture of frustration and resentment, envy flickering in their eyes.
Norah didn’t linger to engage with them. She gathered her things quietly and moved to draw the curtains. “Rest well, Juliana. I’ll see you again soon.”
