Chloe was momentarily at a loss for words. Maddie was sprawled out on the sofa, looking like she didn't have a care in the world. Despite being decked out in high- end designer clothes, there was something weary and jaded in her beautiful features. Chloe didn't know Maddie well, but there was an undeniable complexity about her. After all, she had managed to stay close to Connor for years, fake her own death, and disappear without a trace. Even now, whenever Connor mentioned her, there was a lingering guilt and regret in his voice.

Maddie had even managed to turn Teddy, a notorious playboy from a wealthy family, into someone more grounded and introspective. There was definitely something magnetic about her.

Chloe had a gut feeling that Grant inviting her here wasn't just about making introductions. She turned to Grant and asked, "Grant, what's your real game plan here?"

Grant chuckled, a hint of sadness flitting across his face. "Have you stopped calling me friend now?" he teased.

Chloe eyed him cautiously. “I know you're not going to give up your revenge just because I ask. You've spent your whole life plotting, treating people like chess pieces. Someone like you doesn't deserve true affection, but I do pity you. Your life is all about anger and revenge, with no room for the brighter, warmer things. Isn't that a pretty sad way to live?"

Chloe was desperately trying to buy time.

Grant stood up and said, "Since you're aware of Amelia, you must know about her special talent for hypnosis."

Chloe remembered Connor mentioning it. Amelia was skilled in hypnosis and had once used it to gather intel for Connor. Chloe was starting to connect the dots. "You want to hypnotize me?"

Grant continued, "I know what you're thinking. I'm not going to use my

needles on you to erase your memories right now, that wouldn't help me. But if I use them lightly, without controlling which memories or how much time you lose, Amelia's hypnosis can fill that gap? She can make you forget anything we want and even implant the memories we need."

A shiver ran down Chloe's spine. No wonder Grant was so forthcoming with his plans-he wasn't worried about her knowing because he could erase everything at any moment and plant whatever information he wanted. She realized she might indeed become his puppet.

Finally, she understood what Grant meant by calling her a pawn. He didn't need to conquer her; she was already caught in this dangerous, conspiracy-filled game. Fear welled up inside her, a different kind of fear than she'd felt when facing Claire.

Back then, no matter how dire things got, she could still control her own will. Even

death wouldn't make her surrender. But now, she had no clue what was coming next. She might even be used by Grant to harm Connor. Instinctively, she stepped back.

Grant gave Maddie a look. Maddie got up. Chloe slowly backed toward the door. Just as she was about to make a break for it, Maddie somehow pulled out an antique pocket watch.
