Chapter 936
He just went ahead and lay down right inside the cage, casually propping his head up with one hand. "Ah, my dear apprentice," he chuckled, "seems like your torture skills haven't quite leveled up this year, huh?"
Grant knew his mentor had a background in an assassin organization, trained from a young age. For him, this sort of torment was just another day at the office. Yet, here he was, over seventy, still as fit as a fiddle. It was honestly mind-
boggling.
"Master," Grant said coolly, "if I really wanted to end you, you wouldn't be here now."
The old man lay there, not at all like someone stuck in a cage. In fact, he had the air of a laid-back, mischievous old rascal. "I'm starving. I could go for some roast chicken, drunken crab, meatballs, stuffed fish, bamboo mushroom soup, and a bottle of 50-year-old rice wine," he said, completely unfazed. "Everything's alright here, just the food's a bit too basic."
Grant, usually a stone-cold figure, couldn't help but crack a smile at that. I mean, he did serve up four dishes and a soup every day without repeating a single meal for a week. Not too shabby, right?
"Master, it's been a year, and you still don't seem to grasp your predicament."
Even soaking wet, the old man didn't look one bit ruffled. He had one leg casually crossed over the other. "You've got something to ask me, don't you?" he remarked.
Grant's eyes narrowed a bit, and a slight frown creased his brow. "How do you know I've got something to ask?"
"I raised you, remember? Took you in at eight and traveled everywhere with you. I can read you like a book," the old man replied with a knowing twinkle in his eye.
Grant's frown deepened. His mentor was right, the old man knew hime inside out. Outwardly, Grant was all about that icy composure and ruthless efficiency, but he had no patience for anything crass.
"Okay then, what do I want from you?" Grant challenged.
"That part I can't guess," the old man admitted, "but you wouldn't drop by without
a reason. When you were a kid, you'd get that same half-dead look on your face whenever you needed a favor."
Back then, young Grant was quite
the adorable rascal, feisty yet
charming. Under the old man's "mentorship," he came to grips with the harsh realities of life. Over time, he built up that cold exterior and a stubborn streak tougher than anything. Asking for help? Easier said than done. Even when he did, he wore that same stubborn expression, just like now.
Grant said nothing at first. Instead, he arranged for the old man's lavish meal request. Before long, a sumptuous spread was set in front of the old man's cage.noveldrama
Eagerly, the old man poured himself
།
a glass of wine and took a sip, eyes twinkling in delight. "Ah, this is the stuff Been dreaming of this for a year, he sighed contentedly before digging into the feast.
"So, what brings you here today?" he asked between bites. But before Grant could reply, the old man waved him off. "Let me finish eating first. Don't ruin my appetite."
Grant didn't rush. He patiently waited the whole hour until the old man had his fill,
and the table was cleared. Then he approached.
"Alright, what's got you in a bind this time?" the old man asked.
Grant finally spoke up, "My sister-in-law is pregnant."
What do you think?
